Valenti San Juan has changed the way people have watched TV in Spain, especially in Barcelona and Catalunya. Valenti is the first person in Spain to connect TV with social media, streaming his show online through sites such as YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter.  He started his career abiout 12 years ago on Catalunya Radio. He wanted to created a mashup of radio and TV, which later became known as Visto Lo Visto. Recently, Canal 3 of Catalunya signed Valenti to host his own show on this channel, which is known as Etiquetats.

Valenti San Juan is the host of both Visto Lo Visto and Etiquetats. Visto Lo Visto is a comedy show that airs for about 2 hours during the week online. It is live on YouTube. Visto Lo Visto is in Spanish and Etiquetats is in Catalan. What makes these shows unique is that both of them  use untraditional forms of advertising. Normally on YouTube, before you can view content, there is always a commercial to view before you can access the content. Visto Lo Visto and Etiquetats shows their brands through the shows’ content. They use the method of non-aggressive advertising, which I believe should be more heavily incorporated into American television. Another unique quality of these shows is that they do not make money through clicks, like many YouTube videos do. They do not believe in this and think that their content should be able to be accessed by anyone. These shows are also improvised, with no scripts or content, which also sets them apart from many television shows.

So how do they get an audience? They do a ton of promotion on the internet through social media. They present a challenge on Facebook or Twitter for that week and people comment on it. They also invite a people and they have to respond within a certain amount of days in order to be the audience of the show. Valenti and his team try to get all different types of people to attend the show, so everyone has an opportunity. It is also free to attend the show, which sets it apart from most shows. Valenti thinks people should be able to laugh and have a good time without having to pay for it.

Valenti has greatly impacted the way people in Spain watch television and most of the young people in Barcelona and throughout Catalunya know his name and face. He has huge fans and has set a new standard for Spanish television.

Marketing 2.0

So what exactly is marketing 2.0? Marketing 2.0 is leveraging and using a mixture  of traditional marketing methods like direct mail, e-mail and events with the new Web 2.0 technology such as Twitter, Facebook, Blogs, MySpace,  Widgets, etc. It gives business an opportunity to engage with their consumers more than just by showing them an advertisement, a traditional marketing method.  Companies are using Web 2.0 tools to collaborate with consumers on product development, service enhancement and promotion. Marketers need to keep their consumers engaged and find out about their desires and wishes or they risk losing customers and their reputation.

Lynda M. Applegate, Henry R. Byers Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School gives input about marketing 2.0: “Innovation and technology drive today’s competitive advantage. Using both in marketing techniques can help you turn your marketing from a whisper to a scream”.

Companies have gained business benefits, including more cutting-edge products and services, more effective marketing, greater access to knowledge, decreased cost of doing business, and larger revenues. Successful companies not only tightly blend Web 2.0 technologies with the work of their employees but also construct a “networked company,” linking themselves with customers and suppliers through these techniques.

How far will marketing 2.0 go? Will we see the next age of marketing as Marketing 3.0? Only time will tell.

Politics 2.0

(Illustration by Micah Mertes and Jim Johnson)What exactly is Politics 2.0? How and why did we get here? This is the idea that social media will  revolutionize our ability to follow, support, and influence political campaigns. Well, Barrack Obama´s campaign can greatly be seen as the first campaign to implement politics 2.0.

I personally am not the biggest fan of politics. They bore me. But even so, I realize how important this concept is in society and I am trying to make more of an effort to appreciate them and get more involed. Barrack Obama completely transformed his campiang by incorporating 2.0 strategies. Obama used a combination of traditional political strategies, but also made his campaign more individualized and about the voter. He was able to connect with people by talking to them personally face-to-face, or by tools such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc. He had a personal site, mybarackobama.com. where he could inform users about his campaign and they could talk with him. He utuilzed all of these strategies and used them efficiently to win back-to-back campaigns in 2008 and 2012.
